人には触覚をはじめ全身に多くの感覚器官があり、視覚・聴覚・嗅覚・味覚からも膨大な量の感覚情報が大脳に送られます。
しかし、脳の情報処理には限界があるため入力された一部の感覚情報を取捨選択しています。今重要な情報にフォーカスし意識を向け集中するというのが注意機能の役割になります。
人の意識には無意識（潜在意識）／意識（顕在意識）があるのはご存知だと思います。生活する上で今必要な情報を抜き出し意識に上げ（顕在化）、大部分の情報は意識に上げない（潜在化）フィルターを持っています。
定型（もしくは健常者）と言われるタイプの人は、五感から入る多くの情報から無意識に今必要（重要）な情報を拾い上げ（選択・集中）顕在化しています。
スマートフォンで行き先を確認しながら歩いていて横断歩道に差し掛かった、と想像してみてください。目の前の信号を確認するのはもちろん、対向車が右左折しようとしていないか、スピードを出した車がこちらに向かって来ていないか、点滅する黄信号で向こうに渡り切れるか、自転車やバイクはいないか、渡ったらどちらの方向か、などさまざまな情報を無意識に感覚器官から受け取っていますよね。
定型（もしくは健常者）が意図せず無意識にやっている作業でも、発達障害／高次機能障害／認知症などがあると、多くの情報から特定の情報を拾い上げる注意の集中・選択が苦手だったり、できないことで日常生活に支障が出ることも多くあります。
ＡＳＤなどで感覚過敏があったりＡＤＨＤがあると、感覚情報が多すぎて押し潰れそうに感じたり、脳内整理ができずパニックになったり、思考がフリーズしてしまう場合もあるのです。
自分ができることは誰でもできるだろうと思ってしまいがちですが、目に見えない特性から不得手だったり、できない人もいる、ということを知るのは大切なことだと思っています。
