今日はある日ふと思ったことを書きたいと思います。まったくの私見なので、サラッと読んでくださいね(笑)
日本には古来から“血を吐く思いで”“寝る間も惜しんで”“汗水たらして”“みんなで力を合わせて”努力、頑張ることが美徳とされる【苦痛神話／信仰】があるように思います。
それはなぜか？？
今はその危険が認知されて少なくなってきたように思いますが、振り返れば小中学生時代に無理矢理やらされた組み体操の巨大人間ピラミッド。下の生徒たちの苦痛と危険、上に乗る生徒の恐怖と危険はハンパないと思いませんか？
実際事故も起きていますよね。命をかけてまでおこなわれていたアレ、何の意味があるのか未だによくわかりません。わずかな達成感のために、しなくてもよい怪我のリスクを背負ってまでやること？？
苦痛を伴わないと、その努力は評価に値しないものなのでしょうか。
特にスポーツでは、さまざまな技術を身につけるために“結果”苦痛が伴う頑張りをした・・・はあるかもしれませんが、同じ努力なのに日本人は“より血を吐く思いで頑張った”を評価したがる傾向が高いように思えてなりません。

思うに、この苦痛神話のベースにあるのは、
日本の風土と農耕民族であったという長い歴史
が作り上げたのではないかと考えました。
というのは、農業は自然に影響されることが大きく、干ばつや洪水といった自然災害に常に晒され、人智を超えた自然現象の前に為す術もなく、ただ堪え忍ぶことしかできなかったことは容易に想像できます。当時に比べれば農業技術が飛躍的に進歩した現代ですら被害に遭うのに、自然に頼っていた時代なら尚更だったに違いありません。
そのような歴史が日本人の忍耐力を培い、途方もない時間をかけて苦痛神話／信仰に繋がっていったのではないかという思いに至りました。その間には大地震もあり、すべてが破壊されたこともあったでしょう。
千年以上に渡るそうした歴史が日本人のＤＮＡに組み込まれたのではないか？と思うと、苦痛神話／信仰がそう簡単になくなるとは思えないのです。
例えば、残業することは現代における苦痛神話／信仰が成せる美徳として残っているのではないか、と思うのです。
２０１１年に発生した東日本大震災の際、交通機関が麻痺した東京では、駅などで忍耐強く待つ人々、黙々と歩いて家路に着く人々、暴動略奪も起きませんでした。このことはまさにＤＮＡレベルで染み付いた苦痛神話／信仰が発揮された象徴的な事象だと感じました。それが世界から称賛されたことは記憶に新しいと思います。
歴史を踏まえると日本の苦痛神話／信仰の成り立ちは、深いところで農耕民族であったが故に自然現象の影響を長い間に渡って受けてきたことが大きく関わっている気がします。
