全３回：ストレスマネジメント【１】

新型コロナウイルスの影響で、感染拡大懸念から緊急事態宣言、社会活動の制限がおこなわれ、社会、学校、家庭生活とさまざまなところで不自由を強いられ大きな支障が顕れてきています。

我が家も春から中学２年になった息子がいますが、３月２日以降休校になり、終業式も始業式も簡略化、一体いつから通常授業に入れるのか？これだけの学習の遅れはどう埋めるのか？他校に行っている通級はどうなる？・・・など不安が重くのしかかり、先の見えないストレスが尽きません。

本来なら夢膨らみ、新しい門出となる人も多い春のはずが、私も含め先行き不安から胃が痛くなっている人も多いのではないでしょうか。

本当に無茶苦茶、胃が痛いです。

仕事面の不安にプラスし、思春期＋超絶面倒な特性を持つ発達障害児と顔を合わせる時間が格段に増え、感情的なぶつかり合いを回避するために、メンタル面をフラットに保つ凄まじい努力が加わり、そのストレスたるや筆舌しがたいものがあります。

今回のようなケースでは、現状を自分の力で変えることはどうやってもできないか限界があり、頑張っても経済不安が解消できるわけではありません。しかし、このような時だからこそ、今回を含め３回に分けてストレスマネジメントについてお話ししたいと思います。

初回となる今回は【ストレスとは？】【ストレスが生まれる仕組み】についてお話しします。

普段からストレス、ストレスと言葉にしていますが、【そもそもストレスって一体ナニ？】というところからです。

ストレスとは、

さまざまな肉体的心理的外部刺激により生じた、“歪み”に対して起こる“心身反応”のこと

です。メンタルヘルス用語だと思われがちですが、実は物理学から来ている用語です。

真っ直ぐな金属棒に両端から力を加えていくと、たわみが生じます。しかし、力を緩めると元の形に戻ろうとしますよね。力が外部から加わった（両端から力を加えた）結果、生じたたわみ（歪み）に金属棒が反発する状態、これを物理学用語で『ストレス』と言います。

一般的にはストレスというと、ストレスの原因（ストレッサー）とストレス反応の両方を指します。高温、寒冷、振動や強い光、大きな音などが身体的外部刺激、人間関係、理不尽な扱い、過度なノルマ、能力以上を求められる、生活が脅かされるなどが心理的外部刺激になります。今回の新型コロナウイルスにより生まれるストレスは、社会不安やイライラ感、鬱や胃痛ということになります。

マイナスイメージしかないストレスですが、現実的にストレスがまったくない生活はあり得ませんし、それが望ましいわけでもありません。ストレス＝負荷（負荷は悪い意味だけではありません）とも言えますが、私たちが成長していくために必要なものでもあります。仕事でも、今の能力ではできないことをできるようになりたいと努力する中で、心身に負荷がかかることはよくあると思います。また、逆境が人を強くするとも言われます。

実際、飲食店の中には客足が遠退き、短縮営業を余儀なくされてしまったことで、テイクアウトや通販など、今までやってこなかった方法で何とかこの苦境に立ち向かおうとしている人達がいます。

新型コロナウイルスからくるストレスの是非はともかく、悪者扱いされがちなストレスですが、負荷やプレッシャーは能力を高め、成長を促す役割を持つ源でもあるので、忌み嫌ってはいけない、ということになります。

私自身、息子と衝突を回避するために感情マネジメントにより一層取り組み、生活習慣がこれ以上乱れないように何かできないものかと、あの手この手を考えています。逃げたくても逃げることはできません。

平時に人が一番ストレスを感じるのは人間関係、環境変化だと言われています。仕事でも私生活でも、人間関係のもつれに巻き込まれれば誰でも気が滅入り、憂鬱な気分になるのはわかりやすい因果関係です。これは人間関係のもつれがストレッサー（ストレスの原因）となり、憂鬱な気分になる（ストレス反応）からです。

ストレッサーが同じでも、人によってストレス反応に差があることはご存知でしょう。それは何故だと思いますか？

心理学者のラザラスが打ち出した『心理学的ストレスモデル』で説明されていますが、より分かりやすく噛み砕きます。専門用語でいうところのアプレイザル（判断／評価）とコーピング（対処努力）というプロセスが大切になってきます。

この“アプレイザル（判断／評価）”は、ストレッサーを

  • 負担（望まないけど）
  • 自分を成長させくれる試練

どう捉えるかという私たちの心の中にある“評価プロセス”です。困難で不快な状況に置かれた時に、怒りを覚えるだけの人もいるでしょうし、まったく気にせずスルーできる人もいれば、こんなの大したことはない、これは気付くキッカケだ、厳しい状況だが自分を成長させる貴重な機会だ、など人によって考え方はさまざまです。つまり、この

“負担の受け取り方”次第

ということになります。

ただ、困難な状況に長期間置かれた場合、かなり神経が図太い人でなければ、ストレッサーを負担と感じてしまうのも事実です。

ストレッサー＝負担、と受け取ると心理的負担を少しでも軽くしようと『努力』が始まります。ストレスに直面すると、そのストレスを受け取る側でさまざまな刺激を処理する過程があります。これをアプレイザルとコーピングと言います。

ストレッサーを負担と受け取ると、次にこの心理的負担を軽減しようと努力が始まります。コーピングは、ストレッサーを少しでも軽くしようとする“具体的な努力”を意味し、憂鬱な気持ちやイライラ感などのストレス反応を何とかしようとする努力ではありません。ストレッサー（ストレスの原因）と向き合う前向きな努力です。

コーピングは生まれ持った性格ではなく、努力により身につけられるものなので、性格は簡単に変えることはできないものでも、努力で身につくのであれば、よりよいコーピングを身につけることで、ストレッサーから受ける心理的負担の軽減を図ることができます。

コーピングはストレスマネジメントの鍵となる、とても重要な概念です。

同じ種類の、同じレベルの影響力の強いストレッサーに晒されても、表れるストレス反応（イライラ感、疲労感、鬱や胃痛）は人によって変わってくるとお話ししました。その違いを生むのが、

ストレッサーに対処するコーピングというメカニズム

です。

ちょっと専門的になりますが、コーピングには幾つかのタイプがあり【感情優先】と【問題優先】があります。また感情優先には【感情優先消極】と【感情優先積極】が、問題優先には【問題優先消極】と【問題優先積極】があります。

【感情優先】とは、気分の動揺が激しく、辛く苦しいため、まず気持ちを鎮めてから、その後に問題解決するための対策を考えるタイプ。その際の問題解決はストレスの原因を解決することで気持ちの動揺が収まると考え、まず原因の究明を優先するというタイプです。【感情優先】は気持ちの鎮静化に向かうだけで、ストレスの根本原因の解決には向かわないのがほとんどです。気持ちは落ち着いてもストレッサーはなくならないため、抜本的な対策にはなりづらいです。

【感情優先消極】タイプは、ストレッサーに遭遇すると『嫌なことはなかったことにして忘れよう』と、消極的な手段で気分の鎮静化を図り、【感情優先積極】タイプは『趣味や好きなことに没頭して気分転換しよう』と、積極的な行動を起こし、気分の鎮静化を図るタイプです。

【問題優先】にも同じく消極、積極タイプがあり、【問題優先消極】は『しばらくよく観察してみよう』と問題解決にはすぐに向かわず、まず様子を見るタイプ。【問題優先積極】は『よし、できることから対応してみよう』と周囲に相談したり、自ら問題解決のために行動を起こすタイプです。

こうしたコーピングタイプでストレス耐性が変わってくるのですが、ストレッサーの影響を受けやすく、ストレス反応を起こしやすい、いわゆるストレス耐性が低い人は、感情の鎮静化を優先する傾向があります。逆に、ストレス耐性が高い人は問題解決を優先し、積極的なほうが消極的よりもストレッサーに対処する傾向があります。

次回は誰でもチャレンジできる【積極コーピング】についてお話ししたいと思います。
